  Interview with PILOT Founders
The founders of San Francisco’s Pacific Islander Leaders of Tomorrow (PILOT) program used the digital storytelling process to create compelling documentaries about their experiences as Samoan youth and their aspirations for themselves and their community.

The PILOT program is sponsored by the Samoan Community Development Center (SCDC), an organization whose mission is to improve the quality of life for Samoans and Pacific Islanders. Initiated by the youth of the SCDC and members of the Polynesian Clubs at Phillip and Sala Burton, Balboa, and Thurgood Marshall High Schools, PILOT is dedicated to improving the educational outcome of Pacific Islander students in the San Francisco Unified School District; and ultimately increasing the number of Pacific Islanders pursuing higher education. As part of PILOT’s outreach program, students run Saturday classes that focus on Samoan authors and include seminar discussions about the issues impeding students' academic success.

During the summer of 2006, PILOT partnered with the Pearson Foundation to offer a digital storytelling workshop where participants used technology as a tool to examine and document their experiences, concerns, and beliefs.
