As the culminating project to a unit about mythology, ELD (English Language Development) students at Phillip and Sala Burton Academic High School used laptop computers and video-editing software to create short films, or digital stories, for a target audience of elementary school students. During a weeklong workshop the Burton students collaborated in teams to produce films about myths from cultures around the world — always keeping their young audience in mind.

Once workshop participants had formed groups of their choosing, each team was assigned a culture, as well as a hero from that culture, to serve as their film's focus. Participants conducted research on their topic, synthesized information and stories from the assigned culture, and created a finished film that retells the myth, including background information about the culture and the hero or legend.
