Teacher: Mrs. Williams Grade 4

Mrs. Williams' fourth-grade class typically studies the Transcontinental Railroad and its importance to California history. This year, technology was integrated into the core curriculum of the unit. Just as teamwork, cooperation, and communication were vital to the success of the railroad, those qualities were also important to the students as they formed groups of three and were given the task of creating a digital story, or short film, on a particular aspect of the railroad. The collaborative effort began with the gathering of information, which was used to draft the narration for each team's mini-documentary. Student teams practiced reading the narration fluently and with expression before recording their voiceover track. Selection of digital images to align with the story added a critical-thinking component to the project, as students determined which pictures best matched the historical events in their script. The narration and images were then imported into Adobe Premiere Pro, a video-editing program, and students used titles, special effects, transitions, and music to give their film a professional look. Finally, the team members shared their knowledge by presenting their finished project to the rest of the class. To view the digital stories, click on the images below.
