Teacher: Ms. Peters
Grade 6

The study of Ancient Civilizations is the core of California's sixth-grade social studies curriculum. In Pacheco Elementary School's dual immersion program, where students are taught in both English and Spanish, sixth-graders studied Ancient Greece.

Instead of using a standard lecture/read/study/test method of learning, Ms. Peters actively engaged her class in team research. Students formed small groups, and each group researched a specific area of Ancient Greece to produce a piece of narrative writing on the subject. The narrative writing became the heartbeat for a collaborative digital film, which the students produced and presented to their peers and others as evidence of their learning and hard work. Not only were students challenged critically and cooperatively, but they were also challenged creatively.
