Teacher: Mrs. Neuhauser
Grade 6

Pacheco Elementary School provides a dual-immersion program that gives students the opportunity to learn in both English and Spanish as they study topics – such as earth science – that are central to the California State Standards.

Sixth-grade students in Mrs. Neuhauser’s class took an in-depth look at the topic of plate tectonics. All instruction was in Spanish. As a culmination to their studies, the young learners formed production teams and, with the guidance of their teacher and Mobile Learning Institute staff, worked cooperatively to create curriculum-based films in Spanish.

The process involved reading, writing, speaking, investigation, and exploration – all leading students to a deeper understanding of a topic that is particularly fascinating and relevant to residents of earthquake-prone California! Production of the films also enhanced skills surrounding creative and critical thought, teamwork, and the use of technology.
