Teachers: Mr. Hill and Ms. Howland
Grade 6

California State Standards require all sixth-grade students to have a basic understanding of earth science. Students in the sixth grade at Bishop's Peak Elementary School took a closer look at the formation of the earth, past and present, through an in-depth study of volcanoes and the rock cycle.

After receiving initial instruction, students formed collaborative teams. They worked together to research specific subtopics: gathering information, taking notes, engaging in discussion, and reviewing images as the catalyst for a narrative piece of writing. Students developed oral skills as they practiced reading the narratives aloud with peers and adult volunteers. The narratives were then recorded and became the centerpiece for a digital film, which the student teams produced through a weeklong process involving image selection, decision making, critical thinking, collaborative effort, and creative thought.
