Teacher: Mrs. Dexter
Grades 4 & 5

The study of weather and climate is part of the required California curriculum, and in 2006 fourth and fifth-grade students at Baywood Elementary took an in-depth look at this fascinating topic that affects us all.

During a Mobile Learning Institute workshop held right in the classroom, Mrs. Dexter engaged her class in a process that was a little different from the standard lecture/read/study/test model of instruction: the goal was to produce films that reflected what students had learned about the subject of weather and climate. In the process, student teams were held accountable for all phases of learning while they gained skills and knowledge in various areas of the curriculum.

Collaboraton, cooperation, and critical thought were taught and practiced as teams gathered information, wrote scripts, recorded voiceover tracks, and searched for images. All of these efforts were integrated with technology as students used Adobe's Premiere Pro video-editing software to create their digital films.
