Teacher: Mrs. Craig
Grade 5

Fifth-graders at Baywood Elementary researched meteorology based on the Fifth-Grade California State Standards, with each student studying a topic that matched a particular section of the textbook. Students wrote down important vocabulary and big ideas while they read as a group. From this information they created a multiple-paragraph narrative to serve as the basis for a digital movie. Next, using the narrative, they collected images from a variety of sources (mainly via Google Image Search). As they collected the images, they also took note of the source for each one, thereby creating a bibliography. Students then learned how to create a movie by merging their recorded narrative with their collected images and adding transitions, text, music, and other special effects.

Participants were enthusiastically involved in reading the science text. Acting as the "experts" on their topics, students actively checked their understanding with each other and the teachers.
