Teacher: Mr. Banfield
Grade 4

Each year, Mr. Banfield's fourth-grade class takes a journey through exciting periods in their state's history by building "California's Historic Railroad." Student committees traditionally work together to construct sections for an actual miniature railroad, with each section representing a key part of the saga. This year, students were asked to add another layer: the composition of essays, which were in turn used to make movies (digital stories) about important aspects of California's history.

The hands-on activities required students to employ a variety of skills. Cooperation was a must in all phases of the team project. Creative and critical thought were used in the building, decision-making, and writing stages. Students were stretched to gather images that represented the story, which they then matched to the essays. Using video-editing software, student voices were recorded and the selected images were aligned to the spoken word. Special effects like titles and transitions completed the effort. Our tour of California's history along "California's Historic Railroad" is ready to embark. All aboard!
