Teacher: Ms. Somerwill
Period 5, Sophomore English

Students in Ms. Somerwill's English class fulfilled the tenth-grade standard for autobiographical writing by developing personal narratives that focused on "place." Students created these narratives in response to "House on Mango Street," by Sandra Cisneros.

In the book, Cisneros reveals her characters' outlook on life through their responses to their neighborhood. Students were similarly encouraged to select "places" important to them and then to explore those places in connection with their own lives.

Students' personal reflections were incorporated into scripts for short digital films that they created in small groups. Working together, each team of students assembled an integrated script (narrative) that served as the voiceover for their film. Then, they gathered digital images representing their "place." Finally, they created titles, worked with transitions, and experimented with special effects to complete their project.
