Introduction
Man devised creation stories because he wanted to express beliefs about his creation. He wanted to explain death and living.
A creation story explains his existence. It describes religious and cultural beliefs. Here are two examples:
Christianity
Christians believe that God created heaven, earth and all that lives in them in six days. He rested on the seventh. They believe we are on earth to choose our path for the future, and to decide whether or not to accept Jesus Christ, who died for man’s sins on the cross, as our savior. They believe there will be an “Apocalypse” where God will come and take believers and children up to Heaven, and where the "Anti-Christ” will rule the world for seven years in two periods called “The Tribulation” and “The Great Tribulation." They believe when you die you will either go to Heaven if Jesus Christ is your savior or Hell if you do not accept him into your heart.
Hinduism
Hindus believe in reincarnation. This means when you die, you come back as someone or something else. They believe that you will keep coming back to earth until you live a perfect life. They have one god who has many different forms. They believe cows and monkeys are sacred. Most Hindus are vegetarian. Male Hindus go off to become “holy men” when their kids leave their house. The most important teacher is the Guru. You can’t be considered a Hindu unless you are born into Hinduism. |
