| The morning and afternoon sixth-grade Social Studies classes used their work on Cultural Universals – unique characteristics like art, food, costume, shelter, and family that shape and distinguish every culture – as a point of departure for considering elements in their own lives that might define what an individual, or "mini," culture might be. Based on the poem "Where I'm From" by George Ella Lyons, this writing activity prompted students to create personal poems that they used as scripts for short digital films. Students wrote their own poems and then collaborated in groups of three to assemble an integrated script, which would serve as the voiceover for their film. Working together, students also gathered and selected digital images to illustrate their poems, created titles, worked with transitions, and experimented with special effects to complete their projects.
