| Ms. Adams' seventh-grade language arts class explored the use of figurative language and sensory images through poetry. For two weeks students wrote poems to help develop a sense of voice and to build the confidence required to share the depth of thinking that emerges when writing and reading evocative language rich in imagery, rhythm, and complex syntax. Using the poem, "Where I'm From" by George Ella Lyons as a model, workshop participants created personal poems that they used as scripts for short digital films. In addition to being a highly engaging activity, this project addressed many reading, writing, listening and speaking standards. Students wrote individual poems and then collaborated in groups to create an integrated script, which would serve as the voiceover for their film. Working together, students gathered digital images to illustrate their poems, created titles and experimented with transitions and special effects to complete their projects.
