How does digital storytelling complement your current teaching practices?

Most students would respond very well to digital storytelling. Today's students generally love working with technology, and the linguistic, visual, and musical components of the project will help attract a wide range of students. I believe that reluctant writers, in particular, could benefit from this unique genre.

One important disadvantage to working in this medium is the length of time required to complete a digital story. After the teacher uses instructional time to teach the software, students will still need several hours to complete the digital story. Depending on the teacher's purpose for including digital storytelling in the classroom, this time commitment may or may not be practical. Teachers will have to carefully consider the benefits and the costs of teaching with the digital story.

What are your thoughts about audience and voice?

Digital storytelling requires a unique type of story. If the digital medium is going to serve its purpose, it is important that the author choose an appropriate narrative. The images in a digital story should supplement the text rather than simply illustrate it; some very high quality writing would not succeed in this medium because it does not lend itself well to extension through images. Writing a narrative that depends on images, vocals, and music to tell the whole story demands a high level of critical and creative thinking.
