With support from the Pearson Foundation, the Bay Area Writing Project organized for its local teacher consultants a professional development workshop centered on digital storytelling. This program extended work that had begun in the summer of 2005 during BAWP’s Tech Institute, the first in a series of in-depth collaborations between BAWP, its network of teacher consultants, their students, and Pearson Foundation coaches focused on the method and practice of digital storytelling. The workshop was hosted at Oakland Life Academy by two BAWP teacher consultants and Oakland Life instructors, Clifford Lee and Yumi Matsui, both of whom had offered digital storytelling residencies in their classes during the previous (2005–2006) school year. Fourteen BAWP teacher consultants took part in this weeklong, hands-on professional development workshop. During this time TCs developed their own scripts, sourced relevant digital assets to illustrate their projects, took part in peer critique sessions, and finished by creating their digital stories. Throughout the program, the group considered issues related to teacher leadership, improved literacy, effective curricular and technology integration, and the teaching of writing.
